Talavera is one of the finest ceramics made in Mexico; the process employed starts by choosing the right clays. These clays are washed, cleaned, kneaded and then allowed to air dry to a consistency that allows molding by hand to make all of the jewelry pieces.
They are air dried for several weeks before introducing them to a first firing in a kiln at around 1500 degrees F. The next step is to re-glaze them. They are then painted and decorated by hand to obtain the desired colors and patterns.
Finally the pieces are subjected to a higher firing in a kiln around 1900 degrees F & placed on the pewter, leather, gauze or scarf.
Pewter is a combination of several alloys, consisting mostly of non-toxic aluminum, which gives it the look and durability of silver, but unlike silver and other pewter, Mexican Pewter does not tarnish and requires very little maintenance.
Each piece of pewter is separately sand casted by hand. Molten metal is poured into molds made of sand; the item is then carefully polished by artisans leaving it with a bright & shiny finish that is also slightly rustic. Each piece is an individual product of the craftsman’s hands given you a beautiful & unique hand-made piece of jewelry.
